What is the KEY to Differentiated Teaching???

In order to be able to differentiate your classroom, you have to have the key to unlock the door!

Key Principles:

  • Be clear about what matters in the content area
  • Be sure you understand, appreciate, and build upon each students differences
  • Make sure your instruction and assessment are inseparable
  • Adjust your content, process, and product in response to each students readiness, interest, and learning profile
  • Allow all students to participate in respectful work
  • Collaborate with teachers and students in learning
  • For maximum growth and continued success, make goals
  • Flexibility is the hallmark of a differentiated classroom

I feel that in teaching, we need to examine each of these key issues as part of creating a differentiated classroom. Each hallmark has so much to offer us if we just give each of them the time and effort needed to be implemented into our daily routine.

Be Flexible and everything will fall into place!

I want to understand my students needs, appreciate them, and build on their differences. I feel that we all have the ability to make a difference in students lives, if we just take the time to hear and get to know their individual stories!

  1. What do these principles mean to you, personally? How do you stay flexible when there are so many demands and needs coming at you at the same time? How do you find time to adjust, etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions and give personal examples of the things you discuss. 4 pts.
